Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather, Jr., are supposedly going to fight in August. And not in the street outside a bar or something either. They’ll do it on a roped platform designed just for the occasion while wearing special punching mittens.
Most say McGregor has no chance to win. Mayweather is 49-0 in his boxing career, while McGregor isn’t a boxer and has Macklemore hair. But don’t count the Irish UFC star out too fast. Here are five ways he can pull the upset.
1. model the style of the only person to defeat Mayweather
Mayweather, an unrepentant domestic abuser, was sentenced to jail in 2011 thanks to the work of Clark County, Nevada, prosecutor Lisa Luzaich. She remains the only person to beat Mayweather so far. Can Mayweather put in the work to get a law degree in time for August and then become an seasoned prosecutor? I guess we’ll see how much he wants to win.
2. learn from Manny Pacquiao’s mistakes
Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fought in May of 2015 in the much-hyped “Fight of the Century” and it completely sucked. The worst part of that fight was that I had a bunch of people over to watch on pay-per-view and the fight was so lame that no one had a good time. But since I hosted, it reflected poorly on me. That was completely unfair. Restoring my status as fun and cool person is on McGregor’s shoulders now.
3. be patient
Mayweather is a patient, defensive fighter who will stand there and let McGregor punch himself out if the Irishman comes out too aggressive. McGregor needs to bide his time and pick his spots. Also, the longer he waits, the more likely it is that karma will finally kick in against Mayweather and he will suddenly burst into flames while getting struck by lightning and having a runaway bull gore him through the taint in front of a shocked but overjoyed arena crowd.
4. play to his strengths
As a UFC fighter, McGregor is very good at kicking opponents and then sitting on their chest while repeatedly punching them in the head. That is against the rules in boxing. However, Floyd Mayweather is unable to read the rules of boxing, so he would have no idea that McGregor is doing anything illegal until it was too late.
5. get the fight to a decision
As long as McGregor doesn’t get knocked out, he has a great chance to win by decision. The fight is being held in the United States, after all. History suggests that if given the chance, judges will side with the white guy over the black guy.
