(SP) – Serena Williams’ unborn daughter has joined a select group that includes Alize Cornet, Sabine Lisicki, Marion Batoli and Venus Williams in being able to prevent her mother from winning the women’s singles championship at Wimbledon. The fetus was able to stop Williams from taking her eighth Wimbledon title and 24th Grand Slam title by filling the tennis star’s abdomen to the point she would have difficulty playing tennis.
“I guess my fetus is my first real rival,” Serena said today, hours after the Wimbledon women’s singles tournament ended. “Despite her being in me, I was able to win at the Australian Open. However, she bested me at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. She is a tough competitor.”
The fetus has many already gushing about its future in the sport.
“To accomplish all this by the age of minus-2 months is really impressive,” said tennis analyst Pam Shriver. “And she still has so much developing and growing to do, both as a player and a collection of cells. I also really like how the fetus goes about its business. She doesn’t talk. She just gets things done.”
John McEnroe disagreed, however.
“I’m just not sure we should start calling a fetus great just for beating Serena Williams,” he said. “There’s not a fetus who could win a match on the men’s circuit. That’s just a fact.”
