(SP) – NFL Draft prospect Sam Darnold left scouts awestruck today at the NFL Combine when he set a record in the event’s new test: the Anthem Stand. The USC product stood respectfully straight with his eyes affixed on Old Glory for 4 hours and 37 minutes, besting all other players at his position.
“No team wants to spend an early pick on a quarterback, the face of a franchise, only to find out he cares about social issues,” said one NFL general manager. “Darnold today proved that won’t be an issue with him. He will stand through an anthem rendition, no matter how long.”
The quarterback struggled with several other drills at the combine, but his Anthem Stand was the talk of the day.
“Speed and strength and general athleticism are overrated,” said one scout. “But respect for the troops is the kind of character you can build a winning team around. I’d be surprised if Darnold doesn’t go No. 1.”
UCLA product Josh Rosen only record 5.2 seconds in the Anthem Stand.
”This song is lame as hell,” said Rosen on his poor time. “I’ll do it again if you play a fire track. By friend Billy has a mix tape you should hear.”
