(SP) – Free agent quarterback Robert Griffin III has received little interest from NFL suitors since being released by the Cleveland Browns earlier this month and he thinks he’s hit on the reason why: President Donald Trump.

“I heard Trump say on TV that he’s the reason Colin Kaepernick hasn’t been signed and it really help me put two and two together about how I’m still a free agent,” Griffin told USA Today. “I mean, not to boast, but I’m a Rookie of the Year who has been to a Pro Bowl, has big-time marketing deals and made his own documentary — not to mention winning a Heisman. So me not being snatched up by an NFL team makes zero sense.”

Griffin says he just hasn’t been able to figure out yet why and how the president is undercutting his NFL chances.

“I stand for the anthem and I actually support many Republican positions, so I don’t think that can be it,” said Griffin. “I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I was such a prominent fixture in Washigton, D.C., really the lifeblood of that city for so long, that he thinks blocking me from the NFL counts as changing the D.C. culture. I don’t know. It’s just frustrating because I’m a Hall of Fame QB in the prime of my career just sitting here.”

White House press secretary Sean Spice denied Trump having any involvement today in Griffin’s continued unemployment. However, he did say Trump’s presidency is impacting the NFL.

“I think the president has made teams realize that you don’t want someone like Kaepernick on your team,” said Spicer. “We are returning to Christian values. There’s not a better example of that than the fact that the Jets are giving Christian Hackenberg an actual chance to win their starting job. I mean, that’s just remarkable.”
