NEW ORLEANS – NFL linebacker Manti Te’o is reportedly trying to get out of the contract he just agreed to as a free agent with the New Orleans Saints after receiving a much more significant offer from a team he says approached him online.
“As much as I appreciate the Saints interest in me, I just feel I have to go to this other new team that has been in touch with me over and over again,” said Te’o. “The offer is so much better that it’s not even close and they keep insisting that they really want to be with me and that I’m amazing. I want to be with the Portland Mustangs forever.”
Te’o said the relationship with the Mustangs grew in just the last few days after they contacted him via e-mail.
“I got an e-mail from TheRealPortlandMustangsNFL@gmail and they came right out with the huge offer,” said Te’o, clearly overjoyed about his good fortune. “I wrote back asking them to confirm they were legit because I’ve gotten messed up in this kind of thing before and I’ve never heard of the Portland Mustangs. And they sent a PDF back like five minutes later that said CONTRACT FOR MANTI TEO on the top. They even attached a photo of a football. So, yeah. They checked out. No red flags.”
Even though Te’o signed a two-year deal with the Saints last week, the organization is likely to let him out of the deal.
“We wouldn’t normally do this, of course,” said head coach Sean Payton. “But Manti is obviously, well … you know … you know … slow. And I don’t mean his 40 time. I’m not sure he has the intelligence to be a middle linebacker. We wish him well with his fake team.”
Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers says he has been encouraging his former teammate to take the Portland deal.
“I text him a few times a day about it,” said Rivers. “Like, ‘Manti: you should take that awesome Mustangs deal that is totally legit and not sent to you by me with a fake gmail account.’ Haha. He’s so dumb.”
