(SP) – Despite a rise in support for the banning of assault-style weapons, the St. Louis Cardinals said today that they will go ahead with plans to hold a scheduled Assault Weapons Giveaway Night on April 20th against the Reds.

“There are two things St. Louis Cardinals fans love: players who run hard into second and the 2nd Amendment,” said Cardinals president Bill DeWitt. “On May 18th we’re going to honor both of those things with a night of baseball and a free AR-15 to the first 15,000 fans in attendance.”

All Cardinals fans, even children, who are among the first 15,000 to arrive at the stadium will receive the weapon, but DeWitt said he is not worried that the promotion will go bad like Disco Demolition Night and other infamous baseball promotions.

“We all know that America needs more good guys with a gun to keep the country safe,” said DeWitt. “And we also know that all Cardinals fans are good. They’re the best fans in baseball and we want to make sure they’re all armed to the teeth, including the many without their teeth.”
