PITTSBURGH — NFL cornerback Darrelle Revis is weighing a request by Pittsburgh police to turn himself in on four felony charges and is reportedly willing to make a deal if the police can offer $11 million a year plus incentives. The Jets player fired his agents last fall and is attempting to negotiate the plea with local authorities himself. Pittsburgh police chief Scott Schubert confirmed he has been in touch with Revis and that negotiations are ongoing.
“Darrelle Revis is obviously someone we would very much like to acquire,” said Schubert. “Four felony charges is impressive and we will do what has to be done. That said, $11 million a year seems high.”
The average cost for housing a prisoner in the state of Pennsylvania is approximately $40,000 a year, putting Revis’ asking price well above market rate. But he has insisted he is not the standard wanted man and would be a high-profile get for any state prison — and one that could be a leader among the inmate population while making an immediate impact on a prison football team.
Revis currently has three years left on a 5-year, $70 million deal he signed with the New York Jets before the 2015 season, but prison would void that deal and it is an option he is very much open to.
“I’m trying to be fair here,” Revis said today. “I’m offering to come in for $11 million, which is less than what the Jets pay me. But I feel that prison is a more successful organization than the Jets and would really be a breath of fresh air for me, so I hope we can get a deal done.”
