BOSTON – Former major league pitcher John Rocker received a loud and sustained standing ovation last night at Fenway Park after he was spotted on the stadium’s video board between the fifth and sixth innings. In town to meet with Curt Schilling about becoming a Breitbart contributor, the retired reliever said he appreciated the applause and support.
“Best fans in baseball period,” said Rocker. “And just a great sense of humor. When I played they’d joke around with some of the players and ask them how they got in the country. Hilarious stuff. I always wanted to play in Boston, but it just never worked out. My agent was a homo and never traded me where I wanted to go. I played in Georgia and while the deep South has some great racism, they do it the best up here in Boston.”
Rocker, who also pitched for Cleveland, Texas and Tampa during his career, says racists are dwindling throughout Major League Baseball and he wants to do something about it.
“Look, since I left there are only about 51 racists left in the league,” he said, taking a moment to spit tobacco on the seat in front of him. “CC Sabathia can talk about the lack of African-Americans all he wants but, baseball wants black players while they try to push us racists out. That’s discrimination and a double standard.”
One Red Sox fan took a break from yelling the n-word at Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones to say how much of an honor it was to sit near “a baseball legend” in John Rocker.
“He hates New Yorkers, I hate New Yorkers,” said the Boston fan. “He hates blacks and queers, I hate blacks and queers. I don’t know if he has anything left in his arm, but I’d love to see him help out our bullpen. That’s a guy I can root for with no reservations.”
For just one night, Rocker said, it was great to be recognized for his accomplishments.
“It’s nice to know that I have a legacy in this game that will live on, long past people remembering any strikeout or save I had,” he said. “I will be remembered forever, even by foreigners with AIDS. It’s a good feeling.”
