(SP) – Free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick is reportedly close to signing a deal with the New York Jets as part of his tireless efforts to help the less fortunate.
“I just want to help people out there who need it,” said the former 49ers starter. “Be it inner city organizations, Meals on Wheels, parolees who want to make a fresh start in life, or football organizations most people have given up on or forgotten about.”
The Jets say they appreciate just being considered by Kaepernick for aid and that any little bit helps.
“No one wants to ask for a hand out, but unfortunately that’s where we are,” said Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan. “Colin Kaepernick might not be the ideal quarterback for some teams, but the fact of the matter is that he brings the best QB resume of anyone we’ve had since Brett Favre — and Favre was 40 then. Right now all we have is an old and broken Josh McCown, Bryce Petty and somehow Christian Hackenberg. Even the gift of two games from Kaepernick would mean the world to us. It would give us hope. He played in a real Super Bowl and almost won. That’s the kind of thing our fans dream of.”
While the quarterback reportedly is leaning towards focusing his football charity on the Jets, he still hasn’t decided.
“One thing I think about before giving my time and money is: ‘Are these people and is this an organization that is willing and capable to help themselves, to take it from here, after they get a boost to get going,'” Kaepernick said. “With the Jets, I don’t know. I’m afraid all they know and ever will know is losing. I want to help build success stories, and that feels impossible with the Jets.”
