(SP) – Actor, retired rapper and former streetball legend Ice Cube today congratulated Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook for setting the single-season record for triple-doubles, a stat he helped make famous two decades ago by posting one in a pickup game in his hometown of Compton.
Cube released a statement following Westbrook’s latest triple-double on Sunday night that gave the NBA star 42 for the season, besting Oscar Robertson’s record. Westbrook has already clinched a triple-double for the season, becoming the second player to ever do so.
“Get you on the court and you’re trouble,” read Cube’s statement. “This year you fucked around and got 42 triple doubles. Freaking brothers every way like M.J.
Today you had a good day … and you also had a good season. Congrats.”
The former rapper also congratulated Westbrook for making it through the season without testing positive for the “chronic,” as well as for never using an AK-47, “even on Kevin Durant.”
Cube’s message closed by saying he was “moved by the fact that you did this with the Oklahoma City Thunder, who used to be the Supersonics. Twenty-five years ago, that franchise couldn’t even beat the Lakers.”
Westbrook said he appreciated the sentiments, but admitted he was a bit confused to receive them: “The guy from Are We There Yet rapped and played basketball?”
