NEW YORK — The New York Mets announced the signing of Tim Tebow today, a move that reportedly was not well received by the team’s long-time mascot, Mr. Met. As the news circulated around CitiField this morning, Mr. Met was seen screaming at general manager Sandy Alderson and then attempted to destroy the locker room with a foam bat, but was mostly unsuccessful.
Mr. Met has been the live costumed mascot of the Mets since 1964, but the move to Tebow shows the franchise is looking to appeal to a younger demographic with a new smiling and upbeat avatar for the team.
“We are very excited to add Tim Tebow to the Mets organization,” Alderson said in a statement. “We think he has a lot of potential and we know that fans will absolutely love him.”
While Tebow’s arm drew criticism in a workout last month, the Mets say that can be overcome by giving him a confetti cannon and the team’s scouting report stated that “his quick and easy smile, friendly attitude and bulging, larger-than-life muscles will make him a hit with kids of all ages!”
As for Mr. Met, the team did not address his role with the organization moving forward. However, police were called after Mr. Met made threats to team officials and an “arsenal” of Nerf guns was then found in the trunk of his clown car.
