SAN FRANCISCO – Free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick made it known today that in addition to being willing to stand for the national anthem of the United States this season, he would also be happy to stand for “O Canada” should a team in the CFL happen to give him an opportunity to play football in 2017.
“Just throwing it out there in case any of the Roughrider teams or other CFL teams or Buffalo needs a quarterback who has been to a Super Bowl,” Kaepernick told USA Today. “I have no problem with Canada and would happily stand for their anthem, assuming they play their anthem before CFL games. But if they do, I’d happily stand and listen to it. To my knowledge, Canada has treated minorities much better throughout its history.”
Despite being just 29-years old and having a 90.7 passer rating last year while also running for 6.8 yards per carry, Kaepernick has seen minimal interest from NFL teams so far this offseason, leading to the suspicion teams are colluding to keep him out of the league for his political beliefs. Others claim Kaepernick’s recent statement that he would stand for the American anthem in 2017 is a response to that, yet still the quarterback remains unsigned.
“Do I think that teams are not willing to sign me because there is systematic racism throughout the NFL, thanks primarily to the white, male patriarchy of team ownership?” Kaepernick asked to no one in particular. “That’s … well, that’s something I’d prefer to not talk about until after a team signs me.”
