(SP) – Nineteen year-old soccer star Christian Pulisic published an essay on the Players Tribune today, revealing that it turns out that he is actually a German citizen and not American.

“Totally weird, but in the weeks since the U.S. failed to qualify for the World Cup, I came across some documents that prove that I was actually born in Germany,” wrote Pulisic. “So, yeah … it looks like I’m German now and will get to play in the World Cup.”

Pulisic said he received the citizenship documents after meeting with a friend of his who is skilled with Photoshop.

“I wasn’t over at his place for 20 minutes and he produced some very convincing documents,” Pulisic, who was thought to have been born and raised in Hershey, Pennsylvania, wrote in his first-person essay. “Obviously, I am excited to play for my homeland in the World Cup.”

Pulisic currently plays for Borussia Dortmund of the German Bundesliga, which he wrote “pretty much makes me German, imo, even if jerks want to take a hard look at my new birth certificate. Don’t ruin this for me.”
