(SP) – The Cleveland Browns and New York Jets have both announced they plan to start quarterbacks again this year, a questionable decision considering both teams’ history with the position.
“A lot of people have said: ‘Hey, what if you tried to play without any quarterback for a season or so – see if that works,'” said Browns head coach Hue Jackson. “And while I’ve considered that — god knows using a quarterback hasn’t worked here in Cleveland for decades — I want to give having a quarterback one more shot. I’m hoping for the best or at leat not the worst, like usual.”
Jets head coach Todd Bowles said that in just his three years with the Jets, he has started to suspect that the quarterback position is mostly on its way out in football, kind of like the fullback.
“You’re not seeing it everywhere in the NFL — mainly just here and with the Browns,” he said. “But I know that from my perspective, the quarterback is mainly useless. That’s why our team only has Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty. Why invest in a position that only causes heartache?”
Yet Bowles said the Jets will still use a quarterback this year.
“We haven’t yet figured out what post-quarterback football looks like yet,” he said. “But we hope it’s coming soon. I pray to God every day that it’s coming soon.”
